Elevator – Safety Bulletin: |
“INFRARED DOOR DETECTOR”
Function:
An INFRARED DOOR DETECTOR replaces the existing
obsolete vertical mechanical drop edge on the
leading edge of the car door. This device uses
over a hundred infrared light beams to detect
the presence of a passenger blocking the car door
opening. If a single beam is blocked, the car
door will automatically stop before striking the
passenger. This device is now commonplace on most
elevators.
Reason
for Upgrading:
Obsolete mechanical door edges are the most common
source of liability claims in the elevator industry
because these devices must actually strike a passenger
before the car door will stop. Serious injuries
are increasing because most elevators have infrared
door protection devices and passengers expect
the car door to automatically stop without physical
contact. Additional benefits of upgrading include:
- Decreased
shutdowns – Many problems
related to shutdowns can be tied to problems
with mechanical edges. Infrared detectors
have no moving parts to wear out.
- Aesthetic
upgrade – Since infrared
detectors are mounted behind the car door
they look better and are less likely to be
damaged. Old mechanical edges that stick out
in front of the car door usually look beaten
up after many years striking passengers or
objects.
- Quieter operation
– Infrared detectors
have no moving parts.
- Faster elevator
service - Once the car door
has adequate protection the “door open”
time can be reduced and the “door closing”
speed can be increased to their maximum efficiency.
Both of these adjustments help to provide
faster elevator service.
- Increased
value – This equipment
truly is a sound investment for your elevator.
